and suggestive radiologic findings (e.g., cavitary lesions, nodules, air-crescent sign). Second, although it has been limited in use by national health system and not been studied specifically, intensifying antifungal prophylaxis with the use of moldactive triazoles and increased surveillance by non-culture based diagnostic tests, such as Aspergillus galactomannan, might have an impact for post-influenza invasive aspergillosis, a disease with historically high mortality rates.

Aspergillus fumigatus Infection-Induced Neutrophil Recruitment and Location in the Conducting Airway of Immunocompetent, Neutropenic, and Immunosuppressed Mice

Susceptibility to fungal infection is commonly associated with impaired neutrophil responses. To study the mechanisms underlying this association, we investigated neutrophil recruitment to the conducting airway wall after Aspergillus fumigatus conidium inhalation in mouse models of drug-induced immunosuppression and antibody-mediated neutrophil depletion (neutropenia) by performing three-dimens...

Influenza A virus among the hospitalized young children with acute respiratory infection. Is influenza A co infected with respiratory syncytial virus?

Background: Both influenza A virus (IAV) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cause acute respiratory infection (ARI) in infants and young children. This study was conducted to determine Influenza A virus and its co infection with RSV among the hospitalized children with ARI. Methods: A total of 153 throat samples of the hospitalized young children aged between below one year and 5 years with...

General primer-mediated PCR for detection of Aspergillus species.

A PCR assay was developed for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients. For this purpose, the complete nucleotide sequences of the genes encoding the 18S rRNA of Aspergillus nidulans, Aspergillus terreus, Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus flavus were elucidated and aligned to the sequences of Aspergillus fumigatus and other clinically relevant prokaryotic and eukar...

Fatal Bacillus cereus sepsis following resolving neutropenic enterocolitis during the treatment of acute leukemia.

Bacillus cereus is increasingly being acknowledged as a serious bacterial pathogen in immunosuppressed hosts. We report a case of fatal B. cereus sepsis in a patient with newly diagnosed acute leukemia following resolving neutropenic enterocolitis. Gastrointestinal complaints are common during induction chemotherapy, yet some antimicrobial coverage suitable for generalized neutropenia is not op...

In vivo molecular microimaging of pulmonary aspergillosis.

The early diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is challenging. Fibered confocal fluorescence microscopy (FCFM) is a new technique that allows in vivo imaging of the lung microstructure during bronchoscopy. In this study, we investigated the ability of FCFM to detect a fluorescent peptide-tracer bound to Aspergillus fumigatus in experimental IPA in 13 immunosuppressed, non-neutrop...
